So you found it out he, thats prob quite a shock. It certainly was a shock to many in our system! Or maybe you’ve know for a long time but now it got confirmed and you got a diagnosis or you read the 5 criteria in the DSM-5 and realised you met all of them. First off all pay attention to your breathing. When your breath correctly, more airflow gets into your blood and hence into your brain and hence you will be able to think more clearly. 4 seconds in, hold for 5 breath out slowly 6 or 7 seconds. Repeat 3 times.

But maybe before you do, i should asure you, that you are okay. DID is not like the movies, not at all. You have had this disorder since early childhood. Nothing changed besides the fact that you became aware of it or that you got a diagnosis for it.
Sure becoming aware can be a huge shock and its okay to feel the emotions you feel.
But i hope you know that all your system mates / head mates / alters/ parts / personalities
or whatever terms you use for you, came to help and protect you. Your innocent child brain found a way to cope. Now as an adult you will learn to cope. And so will the other alters. Becoming aware means progress! We highly suggest to start journaling and writing letters to each other. Personally we bullet journal.
Please know the alters are not the reason you have DID
They are not the cause of your DID
They did not give you or make you DID.
It was a child’s brain coping with repeated childhood trauma.
And it was not your fault or the fault of anyone else in your system.
Maybe you got diagnosed with DID but you don’t believe it.
Maybe you don’t want to believe it or can’t believe it.
Maybe you deal with a lot of doubt please know many people with DID experience this.
You are certainly not the only one. And doubting your DID only validates it more that you did not just make it up. Because then you would have known and not doubt it.
Maybe all you can think right now is this makes NO sense.
And right now it doesn’t. Because that is the whole purpose of DID.
To protect the innocent, to protect the brain and mind. To protect you and your body.
And if you are only finding out now, they did a pretty great job!
Try to write a letter or a note, explain whom you are, how old you are and what year it is. Explain you are an adult now. That you are safe(r) now (if that is true) introduce yourself and invite the others to introduce themselves as well. You might find some of them already know each other, while others don’t.
